History of Midwifery

Midwives have historically cared for women within their homes and communities. For generations, experienced women guided mothers through pregnancy and birth, offering wisdom, support, and practical care.

Over time, birth gradually moved into hospital settings as medicalized approaches became more common. Today, many families are rediscovering the value of midwifery care and the benefits of a more personal and physiologic approach to birth.

Midwifery honors the natural rhythms of the body while supporting mothers with knowledge, respect, and compassionate care.

Midwives also honor the legacy of the “Granny Midwives” who served communities with courage, wisdom, and deep respect for birth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing your birth care team is an important decision. Below are some common questions families have when exploring midwifery care and out-of-hospital births.

  • Midwives promote respect for the natural process of birth and induce dignity where dignity is due.

We are more inclined to allow birth to unfold organically. Allowing the spontaneous physiological progression of labor often promotes an optimal birth experience.

  • Out-of-hospital births are often less invasive and more holistic. They offer unique opportunities for women to stand fully in their own power and strength while bringing new life into the world.

There is a certain magic that happens when a woman claims her birth space. That space is uniquely individual and should reflect the essence of the couple.

  • Empowerment brings about transformation. Women deserve to be active participants in decision-making about their bodies and their babies.

By taking charge of your birth journey and creating a supportive network around you, you are more likely to trust yourself and the birthing process — which can lead to a positive birth story.

  • Yes. For healthy, low-risk pregnancies, planned home births with a qualified midwife are a very safe option. Research shows that outcomes for low-risk women planning home births require fewer medical interventions.

Sage Femme Midwifery practices home births with the aim of improving maternal outcomes by reducing mortality and morbidity while increasing access to care and decreasing health inequalities. My priority is to establish a mutually respectful relationship between mom, dad, family, and baby so that birth can unfold safely and with harmony.

Birth Equity & Advocacy

Disparities are impediments to social justice.

Black Mamas and Black Babies are three times more likely to die than White Mamas and White Babies from pregnancy-related causes.

Addressing the social determinants of health — the non-medical factors that influence a person’s health and wellbeing — is essential in reducing maternal and infant morbidity, prematurity, and low infant birthweight.

Public awareness of these statistics is crucial. Support your midwives by sharing their services with friends and families. There must be accountability across government agencies, employers, schools, churches, outreach programs, and community organizations to improve pregnancy outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Together, we can help create a future where every mother and baby receives the dignity, care, and support they deserve.
